What Does Contravention Code 62 Mean?

If you’ve been issued a PCN with a Contravention Code 62 and are wondering what it means, you will find the answer to your question in the following blog post. In addition to this, we will also discuss how to go about paying the PCN for a Contravention Code 62 or appealing against it; as per your circumstances.

What Does Contravention Code 62 Mean?

Contravention Code 62 means that a motorist has been issued with a Penalty Charge Notice or PCN for parking their vehicle with one or more wheels on an urban road instead of the carriageway or footpath parking.

Motorists can be charged with Contravention Code 62 for on-street parking without an extended observation time since such parking of vehicles places pedestrians at risk.

Contravention Code 62 is a high-level contravention with a Penalty Charge Notice amounting to a fine between £35 and £70 if it is paid within 14 days of being issued.

If you’ve been issued with a PCN for a Contravention Code 62, you must pay the PCN by logging into the website of the local council that issued the PCN to you, entering your vehicle registration details and the PCN number.

According to the Traffic Management Act 2004, payment of a PCN is mandatory for motorists and with Contravention 62 being a high-level contravention (of a more serious nature), it is imperative that you pay the amount at the earliest so that there is no additional penalty.

However, if you believe that you’ve been issued a PCN for Contravention 62 in error, you should not pay the PCN and file for an appeal within 14 days.

How Does A Contravention 62 PCN Get Cancelled?

A Contravention 62 can only be cancelled if the motorist can prove either of the following:

  • active loading or unloading was taking place at the time and the vehicle was not left unattended
  • the vehicle had broken down and could not be moved
  • the vehicle was stolen or taken by someone else without the owner’s consent

If you have evidence such as photographs of the location of your vehicle that can prove either of the following, you should appeal against the PCN through the website of the local council that has issued the PCN to you and remember to provide these as evidence in support of your appeal.

How Do You Pay Contravention 62 PCN?

You can pay a Contravention 62 PCN in either of the following ways:

  • cash
  • cheque
  • credit card
  • debit card
  • postal order

A PCN should be paid within 28 days of being issued otherwise you will be issued a charge certificate. If you are issued with a charge certificate you will have 14 days to clear your dues before an additional amount of 50 per cent of the fine is added to your PCN charges.

Conclusion:

The above discussion helps to conclude that Contravention Code 62 is a high-level contravention which makes it a serious parking offence; against which a PCN is issued by the local council. It indicates that the motorist had parked their vehicle with one or more wheels on an urban road which can be dangerous for pedestrians.
